Supporting the lowest 20% readers CPD, reading courses for schools, developing reading

The latest OFSTED Inspection Framework has a clear focus on the lowest 20% of readers, with a mandatory deep dive into early reading and reading in primary schools for graded inspections and as part of a focus area for ungraded inspections. Reading – and phonics – will also be a significant area of a secondary school inspection too!

There is an expectation that reading is a high priority for all schools so that all pupils become fluent, confident readers. This course focuses all aspects of the reading curriculum and provides practical guidance and resources to support the lowest 20%.

  • OFSTED inspection – Early reading and whole school priorities
  • Developing an outstanding Reading Culture
  • Barriers many children have to reading
  • Working with parents
  • Progression of reading skills and behaviours
  • Recent research outcomes about reading for your most vulnerable readers
  • The importance of understanding Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary to develop comprehension

This course is aimed at:

  • Teachers
  • English and reading leads
  • Senior leaders

9.30 am – 12.30 pm

I found the course extremely useful. The facts and figures contributed to the understanding of where reading is challenging for some. I liked the slides, which were easy to read and useful as print outs and the delivery and anecdotes made the course more fun. The opportunity to share ideas was also good and having a chance to try out some of the activities also made the course more engaging.

This course was very informative. The trainer, John, provided very valuable information about OFSTED deep dives and how to promote reading across the school. In addition, the course leader presented the information in a very clear way. I was able to reflect on things that I could implement in my school. The vocabulary aspect was very interesting. The entire course was very enlightening. Thank you for this training.
